Behind the lens
A few words about where this project comes from, and why I keep making things
Mod and Shoot is an independent DIY project, developed in Kyiv, Ukraine. When everyday life keeps throwing challenges at you, one after another, it’s important to keep noticing the beauty around, and leave some space for things you do just because they’re exciting. For me, that’s taking phones apart and seeing how vintage lenses can change the image quality of their camera modules.
I’ve always been fascinated by people who spend hours in a garage tuning a car that already drives fine, building an audio system for details only they can hear, or restoring an old radio nobody asked them to restore. Every one of those projects is a chain of small discoveries: change one part, test it, get a surprising result, change another, until the whole thing behaves the way you want. Half the fun is the process itself, and the final result is almost a bonus.
I didn’t plan any of the tools on this site from the beginning. Replacing the phone’s built-in lens with C-mount optics brought a huge boost in its camera versatility and image quality. But it also introduced a purple tint, because the phone kept applying shading correction made for the lens that was no longer there. So I reverse-engineered the Qualcomm correction tuning files and built a patch generator. It worked, but the patch requires root, so the camera app came next as a better alternative. Then people kept asking which lens would fit their specific sensor to get a desired field of view, so the lens selector followed. Every tool exists because somebody needed it to move further in their experimentation.
And the best part is meeting people who got into this hobby the same way: they saw a random lens, wondered whether it would fit on their phone, and found out. The projects page keeps filling with modded phones, each made a bit differently, and every new one proves the idea actually works. Curiosity turns out to be contagious, and it’s a good feeling to find a stranger on the other side of the world with the same DIY mindset. So if you have an odd lens in a drawer, maybe it’s time to find out whether it fits your phone camera module and join our modding community :)
